Facebook is one of the main forums for discussion on the web. Getting connected with Facebook is a great strategy to make your blog more visible and get people talking about your posts.
One of the main questions a person asks when starting a blog is “How do I drive traffic to my blog?” While the obvious answer is social media, the techniques to get your blog on social media are sometimes elusive. Facebook offers many social media plugins that work with their platform. The one I’m going to discuss is the Facebook comments box.
I have recently transitioned from WordPress comments to the Facebook plugin. Setting this up is not difficult. The first thing you need is a Facebook account. Then you need to register for the free developer account. This process takes only a few clicks. If you already have a Facebook account then simply click this link: https://developers.facebook.com. Login with your Facebook username and password, accept the terms and conditions, and then you’re ready to go.
“Using Facebook plugins is easy. All you need is a Facebook account.”
The video below walks you through the process of creating a Facebook comments box. The video was done in 2012 so the Facebook developer page has changed its look a little, but the process is still the same. You will initially create an App. This will give you an APP ID that you will use to link from your page to Facebook. To get to the plugins on the Facebook developer page simply click the “Docs” link from the links at the top of the page. Then click the “Social Plugins” in the column on the right, in the center of the page. Then click the “Comments” link to create your comments box. One note, you must first create an App before you go to “Social Plugins” to create your comments box. The pertinent content is given in the first 5min 30secs of the video below.

If you’ve gotten this far then you are well on your way to adding Facebook plugins to your website. The next step involves placing the code in the correct location on your webpage. After you click the “Get Code” button you will see 2 boxes of code. The first box is code that must be placed in the <body> of pages that will use the plugin. The second box contains code that should be placed in whatever location on your webpage you want the actual comments box to appear. If you are using the Divi theme from Elegant Themes then click this link to get step-by-step instructions on how to place this code in your WordPress site. If you are using some other WordPress theme, the video below walks you through the process of placing code in your webpage.
Finally, remember to uncheck the box that says “Allow Comments” on your blog posts. This will remove the default WordPress comments box that is automatically added to each post.
